Review: Villainess Apple Butter Handmade Soap
by Kristen Magee, anise&currant editor-in-chief

With their dark humored product descriptions and truly original scent names, Villainess has carved out a unique place in the realm of handmade soap. How could you not have fun during a trip to the Villainess website?

I recently tried Villainess' Apple Butter handmade soap, and let me say that their outstanding product descriptions and product names are matched only by the high quality of their products.

Autumn is one of my favorite times of the year, so I'm always drawn to autumnal scented products…apple, cranberry, and pumpkin are high on my list. Villainess describes their Apple Butter handmade soap as, "Thick, honeyed apple-butter, lightly spiced with summer-sweet clover and cinnamon." What I found was warm and comforting — to me, the scent was very close to a bowl of warm, apple cinnamon oatmeal. However, I don't know that I would describe this as an all out "foody" scent. Is there such a thing as a nuanced, sophisticated bowl of warm, apple cinnamon oatmeal? If there is, then this is what Villainess' Apple Butter soap smells like to me.

The quality of the soap is exceptional, as well. Long lasting with a healthy lather, I have to admit that one of my favorite touches was the dried apple pieces on top. So pretty.

Villainess is closed until November 15, 2006 to re-stock and prep for the busy holiday season, but you can do some window shopping in the meantime.
